The Grade Three Reading Academy Society congratulates our 2022 recipients

Maisie Sware, Class of 2013

Believing post-secondary was the natural progression from high school, Maisie recognized in grade 10 that she would have to buckle down in order to take that step.  It meant setting aside her love of singing and musical theatre to focus all her energy on academics.  To her credit, she made honor roll in each grade 10, 11, & 12 earning her a place in the Bachelor of Science Nursing program at Northwestern Polytechnic this fall!

In her scholarship essay Maisie attributes her love of reading to the daily Guided Reading Center at Reading U where the professor read books by Roald Dahl.  A favorite memory of the program was the trip to Coles where students were able to choose a book to take home.  Professor Olichny recalls Maisie being the “last man standing” on that trip.  They walked through the aisles together, reading each title and carefully sliding out interesting books to admire.  It was a difficult decision.

In the photo here, taken at the 2022 Reading U Graduation in the Douglas J. Cardinal Theatre at NWP July 22, you will note a stunning piece of jewelry around Maisie’s neck.  This is a necklace she purchased in the RU store in the summer of 2013 with her well-deserved RU bucks!  Those bucks are earned through success and good citizenship during the program.  We are so glad she was not wearing one of the fake moustaches that seem to be a student favorite year after year!

Matthew Ljuden, Class of 2013

Matthew has been accepted into the University of Alberta’s Commerce program this fall.  At the same time he will be playing football with the Golden Bears! His university goal is to become an Academic All - Canadian athlete, and we have no doubt it he will make it so.

He credits his academic success to a teacher at Holy Cross, and his parents, advocating for his attendance at Reading U.   Teachers believing in him, parents encouraging him, and his own desire to succeed led to a rejuvenated confidence.  Matthew tells us he “came back to school excited to be there and ready to learn!  I still struggled but had strategies in my back pocket to help me through.”

That mindset carried Matthew through the next 8 years of school where he achieved academic honours through out.  In Grade 9 Matthew began playing football where he has gained recognition both for his athleticism and leadership as Captain on local and provincial teams.  He has volunteered as assistant coach in pee wee and bantam football, participated in Rotary food drives, and volunteered his time at Mackenzie Place.
