STUDENT AWARDS

To celebrate and acknowledge the achievements of all our former students we offer a  Student Award to students who have graduated from Reading University and who have now graduated from High School.  

   

Congratulations to our 2024 recipient

Gage Garand, Class of 2015

Gage has recently graduated from St. Joseph's High School and will be attending Mount Royal University this fall to study Physical Education. Throughout high school, Gage demonstrated leadership, extensive athletic knowledge, and achieved personal academic goals. He maintained an above-average GPA in English, French, Math, Social Studies, Biology, and Athletic Development, all while excelling on the football field.

Gage's athletic achievements include two gold medals in Jujitsu at the provincial level and Most Outstanding Defensive Player and Defensive Back Awards for the Mighty Peace Football League. His dedication and leadership made him successful on the field.

In addition to his academic and athletic pursuits, Gage has gained valuable work experience and actively contributed to his community. He volunteered at McHappy Days, the GPFFCA annual Golf Tournament, and served as a junior football coach.

Gage is passionate about combining his love for sports with his academic interests. He looks forward to studying kinesiology, sports psychology, and health education, aiming to promote healthy lifestyles and coach aspiring athletes.

The Grade Three Reading Academy Society is proud to support Gage Garand as he embarks on his university journey, confident he will continue to excel in his future endeavors.

Brie Martin, Class of 2014

Congratulations to Brie on receiving the 2023 Scholarship to support her journey toward Fabrication Journeyman Certification. Throughout her time at Reading University and beyond, Brie's dedication and hard work have been evident in all her endeavors.

We are proud to celebrate Brie's achievements and excited to see her continue to excel in her chosen field.

The Grade Three Reading Academy Society congratulates our 2022 recipients

Maisie Sware, Class of 2013

Believing post-secondary was the natural progression from high school, Maisie recognized in grade 10 that she would have to buckle down in order to take that step.  It meant setting aside her love of singing and musical theatre to focus all her energy on academics.  To her credit, she made honor roll in each grade 10, 11, & 12 earning her a place in the Bachelor of Science Nursing program at Northwestern Polytechnic this fall!

In her scholarship essay Maisie attributes her love of reading to the daily Guided Reading Center at Reading U where the professor read books by Roald Dahl.  A favorite memory of the program was the trip to Coles where students were able to choose a book to take home.  Professor Olichny recalls Maisie being the “last man standing” on that trip.  They walked through the aisles together, reading each title and carefully sliding out interesting books to admire.  It was a difficult decision.

In the photo here, taken at the 2022 Reading U Graduation in the Douglas J. Cardinal Theatre at NWP July 22, you will note a stunning piece of jewelry around Maisie’s neck.  This is a necklace she purchased in the RU store in the summer of 2013 with her well-deserved RU bucks!  Those bucks are earned through success and good citizenship during the program.  We are so glad she was not wearing one of the fake moustaches that seem to be a student favorite year after year!

Matthew Ljuden, Class of 2013

Matthew has been accepted into the University of Alberta’s Commerce program this fall.  At the same time he will be playing football with the Golden Bears! His university goal is to become an Academic All - Canadian athlete, and we have no doubt it he will make it so.

He credits his academic success to a teacher at Holy Cross, and his parents, advocating for his attendance at Reading U.   Teachers believing in him, parents encouraging him, and his own desire to succeed led to a rejuvenated confidence.  Matthew tells us he “came back to school excited to be there and ready to learn!  I still struggled but had strategies in my back pocket to help me through.”

That mindset carried Matthew through the next 8 years of school where he achieved academic honours through out.  In Grade 9 Matthew began playing football where he has gained recognition both for his athleticism and leadership as Captain on local and provincial teams.  He has volunteered as assistant coach in pee wee and bantam football, participated in Rotary food drives, and volunteered his time at Mackenzie Place.
